Improving Access to Optimal Care to Black and Brown Women Experiencing Perinatal Mood Disorders
The Southeast Michigan Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative (SEMPQIC) is one of ten Michigan Perinatal Quality Collaboratives (MI-PQC) in the state. Each is dedicated to improving outcomes for families during the preconception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum periods. SEMPQIC, established in 2015, serves Prosperity Region 10. The goal of SEMPQIC is to provide leadership, coordination, and opportunities to eliminate the root causes of perinatal inequities through collective impact and system reform so that all Black and Brown birthing people and babies in region 10 have optimal health outcomes.

Improving Transportation for Low-Income Black Women in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties.
In order to address the critical issue of infant mortality in Metro Detroit, this report investigates the relationship between perinatal care access and transportation barriers for low-income Black mothers in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. Primary data, including surveys and interviews with low-income Black mothers in the Metro Detroit area, was collected to supplement existing literature and highlight the lived experiences of those directly impacted by transportation barriers. These personal stories and anecdotes illustrate the daily challenges faced by pregnant women and new mothers as they navigate unreliable public transportation, high costs, safety concerns, and the difficulties of traveling with young children. This report aims to shed light on the transportation pain points experienced by this vulnerable population and inform effective interventions that can improve access to perinatal care, ultimately reducing infant mortality rates in Metro Detroit.
